Linear algebra Introduction

Vectors

Describe an observation with an ordered list of numbers.

Before this

No earlier lesson needed. Start here.

The intuition

A vector groups quantities that belong together. A point on a map can be represented by two coordinates; a house can be represented by its area and number of rooms.

A concrete example

[80, 3] might describe an 80-square-metre home with 3 rooms. Adding [10, 1] gives [90, 4]. Each position keeps the same meaning.

What to remember

Order and units matter. Swapping the entries changes what the vector describes.
